On April 16, 10 pro-democracy leaders in Hong Kong were sentenced to a maximum of 18 months for organizing and participating in protests against the extradition bill in 2019. Meanwhile, Beijing approved major changes to Hong Kong’s electoral system, effectively establishing near-total control in choosing Hong Kong’s leaders. The world is watching as Hong Kong is rapidly losing its freedom and the rule of law under the Chinese Communist Party. In this interview with Emily Lau, former Democratic Party chair and legislator, she talks about the anguish, the fear, and the perseverance of the Hong Kong people when facing the darkest era in Hong Kong’s history.
