Lawmakers are demanding answers from the Pentagon after $30 million in federal research grants were possibly dumped into China’s artificial intelligence development.
While at UCLA, a top AI scientist named Song-Chun Zhu received $30 million in federal grants for his research on the most advanced AI technology—a tool that could prove useful for military applications.
The bulk of the money he received came from the Pentagon.
Mr. Zhu later went back to China. Now, he’s leading China’s efforts to develop high-end AI.
