After 18 hours of debate, House Republicans pushed legislation through the Ways and Means Committee, to abolish the tax penalty for Americans who don’t buy health insurance.

The rule is known as “the mandate,” and it is the aspect of Obamacare Republicans disagree with the most, because it imposes fines on Americans who don’t buy insurance.

The GOP’s new health care bill does face challenges, with some Republican governors worried about losing expanded Medicaid in their states, and some more conservative Republicans thinking the law doesn’t go far enough in repealing Obamacare.

The Energy and Commerce Committee is now working on reshaping policy on another aspect of US healthcare—Medicaid.
