‘If We Lose Those Satellites, There’s No Putting Humpty Dumpty Back Together’: Brandon Weichert

In this special episode, we sat down with Brandon Weichert, author of “Winning Space: How America Remains a Superpower,” and Rick Fisher, senior fellow at the International Assessment and Strategy Center. They spoke about China and Russia’s growing space ambitions, what would happen if America loses its edge in space, and what steps could be taken to stem the tide.

Weichert said, “We need to be doubling down on our military advantages in space and moving to protect our existing satellite constellations, while at the same time threatening the satellites of our enemies. And we’re going in the opposite direction, and that is going to lead to catastrophe.”

Fisher noted, “The vice president makes this latest gesture in announcing a ban on destructive ASAT tests—anti-satellite tests—but the cat is already out of the bag. … This race has been galloping for decades. And it really is much more a matter for the United States to develop deterrent capabilities than it is to make political gestures.”
