Incredible, geometric patterns using sand and a mallet

How to create a colorful and geometrically precise mandala without using a ruler, or even without touching the actual color or dye? Japanese performance artist Kenichi Kanazawa has found a stunningly simple way to do so. All it takes is a rubber mallet, four spots of colorful sand and a table:

As he moves the mallet to a specific rhythm the sand begins to arrange itself into beautiful geometric patterns resembling a mandala.

The creation of such patterns with sound is known as Cymatics, which means the process of visualizing sound. As the frequency of the mallet strokes resonate with the table, they create regular and well defined spots where sand will oscillate towards, as well as spots where no sand will remain after a few seconds of mallet strokes.
