Amazon India Fashion Week had Indian handloom fashions as this year’s theme. Demand for clothing made via traditional handlooms has increased.

In 2015 and 2016 India exported $360 million in handloom products. The top buyers were the United States, the United Kingdom, and the United Arab Emirates.

The popularity of the technique is helping to raise the profile of traditional handloom weavers in the country.

Hussein, Weaver at Handloom School:

“We had never seen our final product. We didn’t know where our handloom-made fabrics went or what came of them. But, here we saw what is made from our handloom fabrics and it was presented right in front of our eyes. So I am shocked (in a good way). It made all of us very happy.”

Indian fashionistas hope the government will see the benefit of the rising trend, and put some support behind helping India to popularize its traditional way of producing clothing.
