Indian woman attacked with acid for fourth time

An Indian woman who had survived three previous acid attacks is now the victim of a fourth.

The 35-year-old woman was attacked by a group of men on July 1, as she drew water from a tap outside the women’s hostel and cafe where she lives and works.

She is in a trauma center in critical condition, police said.

The victim was involved in a court case, seeking justice for a gang rape.

The chief minister of Uttar Pradesh State, Yogi Adityanath, visited the victim and announced that she would receive financial support. The victim has also been provided security.

Women’s rights are not a popular topic in some parts of India. Attacks on women have been accepted and ignored.

This woman helped run a cafe with other women who had been attacked with acid. She lived in a hostel for working women.

Acid attacks are rising in India. About 1,000 are reported each year. Many victims do not file a report, fearing retaliation.

Almost all the victims are women. Most attackers aim at victims’ faces, to disfigure them.

Acid is easy to get in India, despite a 2013 law to limit it.
