Indian woman gifts toilet to elderly mother-in-law

An Indian woman gifted a toilet to her mother-in-law.

While that’s not your typical Mother’s Day gift, it is a necessity in Chandana Jwala Prasad’s village in Kanpur city.

Chandana, who is already 80 years old herself, sold five goats to construct the toilet for her 102-year-old mother-in-law Maya Devi Prasad.

Maya had broken her leg when she tried to relieve herself out in the open. After that, she couldn’t walk anymore. Chandana knew she had to build a toilet for her mother-in-law. When local authorities wouldn’t help, she took matters into her own hands,

Some 52.4 percent of households in rural areas do not have toilets, according to a 2016 survey conducted by the Indian government.
