An Indiana woman who was trapped in her car for nearly two days was rescued and is now recovering in the hospital.
Police said the 69-year-old woman, who was not identified in media reports, went off the road and got wedged in trees, The Indy Channel reported.
On Aug. 5, local Terry Boas said she heard the honking of a car horn over and over.
“I thought it was a car alarm because it had a pattern,” said Boas, who lives near the accident site. “Then it stopped having a pattern and became real persistent. That’s when I thought something wasn’t quite right.”
“The passenger’s side door, you probably could have opened that, but there was about a five-six foot drop-off that would have made it very difficult for someone who wasn’t in great physical condition to get out of the vehicle,” added Bloomington Police Department Capt. Steve Kellams.
Investigators told CBS4 that a neighbor walking her dog saw the car stuck in the woods. When first responders arrived, they had to cut a path to reach the victim to rescue her.
“We really don’t run into this incident that often where someone is in a vehicle for that long of a period. I’m sure that’s a good outcome for the situation she was in for that amount of time, that is a long time to go without water and it’s been a hot week,” Sgt. Bryan Hutchinson with the Bloomington Fire Department told the CBS affiliate.
Police only identified the woman as Evelyn, adding that she wasn’t seriously hurt but was dehydrated.
