Landslides on Indonesia’s heavily populated island of Java killed at least five people and left 38 missing, an official at the country’s disaster agency said on Jan. 1.

The landslides, which struck a village in West Java on Dec. 31, also injured two people and buried 30 homes, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, a spokesman for Indonesia’s disaster agency said in a statement.

The rainy weather is hampering rescue operations, Nugroho said, adding that heavy equipment was needed to help search for survivors.
