Infant holds onto to mother after she dies in railway accident

A young child was found clinging to his dead mother near a railway track in Madhya Pradesh, India on May 25.

The mother was hit by a train but the infant survived. She was still trying to breastfeed her child before dying.

“When I reached the spot, the infant was near the mother. Some people said that the infant was breast-feeding from the dead mother. My seniors told me to take the infant to the hospital and get a health check-up. A check-up has been done and childcare authorities have been informed and they will look into the matter,” said government railway police officer Nandram.

Indian news agency Asian News International (ANI) obtained amateur video of the incident.

The child was taken to a hospital. A medical examination showed he had a cold but was otherwise healthy.

The 18-month-old has been taken into the care of a child welfare committee.

The heartbreaking incident drew a lot of attention in India.
