Inflation, Sanctions, Poverty Underlie Iran Dress Code Protests: Former Mayor

Protests erupted in Iran in response to a young woman who died in police custody after being arrested for violating the Islamic Republic’s strict dress code. Protesters clashed with security forces and are calling for an end to the clerical establishment. NTD spoke to Azra Jafari, Afghanistan’s first female mayor and human rights advocate, to learn more. Jafari says there may be underlying reasons for the protests, including sanctions, poverty, and inflation.
