Israel fought off an aerial attack from Iran over the weekend in a major escalation of tensions in the Middle East. Iran launched over 300 projectiles on Saturday in its first direct attack on Israel from Iranian territory.

Israeli sources said its military, and its allies, shot down 99 percent of the projectiles. These included cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, and drones. Iran said the attack was in response to what it claims was an Israeli strike on its embassy compound in Syria in early April. A number of Iranian strikes found their targets, causing light damage to a military base in the south of the country.

Israel’s Foreign Minister said he wouldn’t rule out retaliating against Iran, but President Joe Biden is pushing for a diplomatic solution to prevent further escalation.
