European Union’s chief Brexit negotiator Michael Barnier reaffirmed EU’s support for Ireland amid divorce talks with Britain. Barnier said on May 11 that the EU and Ireland have shared interests.
“I want to reassure the Irish people in this negotiation Ireland’s interests will be the Union interest. We are in this negotiation together and a united EU will be here for you,” said Barnier while addressing the two houses of the Irish Parliament. He added that there will be no aggressiveness in Brexit talks as the EU and U.K. should maintain a strong relationship.
Ireland is the only land bordering the U.K., it also has close trading ties with Britain. As the remaining EU member, Ireland fears great losses after Britain quits the bloc.
