The Republican-led House of Representatives could soon vote on legislation to abolish the IRS and replace the income tax code with a national consumption tax.

Rep. Buddy Carter (R-Ga.) introduced the Fair Tax Act (pdf) on Wednesday. The bill would eliminate income, death, gift, and payroll taxes and replace the system with a national sales tax, a plan that proponents say would simplify the tax code and end the need for the IRS.

NTD spoke with Rep. Ralph Norman (R-S.C.) about the idea of abolishing the IRS. Rep Norman said the IRS is bloated and inefficient, and abolishing the agency would reduce the burden on American taxpayers.

According to Fox News, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy agreed to allow a floor vote on the bill as part of an arrangement to earn support for him to become speaker of the House. But analysts believe that the bill has little chance of becoming law since it has little chance to pass the Democratic-controlled Senate.
