Fans of singer Michael Bublé were shocked when he apparently announced news of his “official” retirement during an interview with the Daily Mail on Oct. 13.
But all may not be lost for fans of the Canadian crooner.
Confusingly, the next day, his publisher issued a flat denial, saying he had no plans to retire.
In his in-depth interview with the Daily Mail, Bublé talked about how his son’s battle with cancer had led him to re-evaluate his life, and to lose his appetite for “celebrity narcissism.”
Then at the end of the interview, he reportedly said, ‘This is my last interview. I’m retiring from the business. I’ve made the perfect record and now I can leave at the very top.”
The following day, however, his publicist said he has “absolutely no plans to retire.”
New Album
Bublé, 43, found global fame in the mid 2000s with his throw-back classic jazz and soul style influenced by the likes of Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, and Stevie Wonder.
He is releasing a new album next month.
Bublé had to take a step back from his career after his eldest son was diagnosed with cancer.
But the claim in the Daily Mail that he had now “officially retired” following his son’s battle with cancer is wrong, according to his publicist Liz Rosenberg.
She told Insider, “I wasn’t sitting in on the interview but this must have been taken out of context.”
“Perhaps as he discussed the different emotions he’s been through these last few years, that thought might have gone through his mind,” she said. “I assure you with a new album coming out, TV appearances, and a possible tour, he is not retiring.”
Us Weekly reported that an anonymous representative said he “is absolutely not retiring.”
‘I Decided I’d Never Read My Name Again in Print’
According to the Mail, Bublé, said after his son was diagnosed with liver cancer at the age of 3, his perspective on a lot of things changed.
“I’d started to do things out of my comfort zone, like presenting, and the truth is it had been a while since I’d been having fun. I’d started to worry about ticket sales for my tours, what the critics said, what the perception of me might be,” Bublé said. “The diagnosis made me realize how stupid I’d been to worry about these unimportant things. I was embarrassed by my ego, that it had allowed this insecurity.”
“And I decided I’d never read my name again in print, never read a review, and I never have. I decided I’d never use social media again, and I never have,” he added.
