Caesarea was once part of Judea, and was ruled by King Herod of the Roman Empire. He named the city in honor of Emperor Augustus Caesar.

The city now hosts tourist attractions like an aqueduct and the region’s oldest surviving Roman theater.

Authorities will soon rebuild a temple that once stood tall.

Doron Ben Ami, archaeologist with the Israel Antiquities Authority, spoke about the temple’s historical significance.
This is a real outstanding structure. It could be seen from a distance, from distant ships that were aimed to reach the shores of the Holy Land here could see this structure from a distance, as I said. And the building was magnificent.”

With the $27 million restoration project, Israeli authorities want the city to become second only to Jerusalem in tourist visits.
