Israel celebrates 69 years of independence

The modern State of Israel rose from the horrors of the Holocaust to offer a homeland to Jewish people everywhere.

Israel had to fight for its independence, and has had to fight almost constantly to keep it. It is therefore understandable that much of its 69th Independence Day celebration should feature military displays.

Israel is a functioning democracy that accepts all cultures and religions and offers human rights to all its citizens, regardless of origin.

It is surrounded by far less liberal and far more autocratic regimes, and is often the target of terror attacks.

The Israeli people have learned to savor life despite the pressure.

Happy Birthday, Israel, and best wishes for many more.
