Ivanka Trump led a panel discussion to stop human trafficking. The panel met at the White House on Wednesday, 17.
Ivanka is assistant to the president and first daughter.
This is the second meeting held on the subject since President Trump took office in January. The president led the first discussion himself back in February. Today, the younger Trump oversaw the meeting.
“Today we bring an additional and critical group to the table, legislative leaders, to discuss concrete steps through legislation. Next week is ‘Combating Trafficking and Child Protection Week’ in Congress and many of you have contributed to the nine bills, the nine pieces of legislation that will be directly addressing this issue,” said Ivanka. “It’s our responsibility to put an end to human trafficking once and for all.”
Ivanka also cited statistics from the International Labor Organization, which estimated there are 21 million human trafficking victims at any given moment in the world. In 2016, 8,000 cases were reported to the National Human Trafficking Hotline in the United States—a 35 percent increase from 2015.
