An aged Jeep Wagoneer was pulled from underneath a Cape Cod sand dune on Friday, after it had sat buried there for roughly 40 years.

John Musnuff, who is a member of the family that owns the Jeep, was on site for the removal of the Jeep.

“This is our house, this is our family house. It’s been in the family since 1895. It was part of the lifesaving station and there was a garage here that housed the Jeep that was a beach buggy. We used to drive it on the beach, go fishing and recreate, but that stopped about 40 years ago so the Jeep has been … was in the garage and it got buried by sand and now it was time to take it out.” – John Musnuff said.

The vehicle had been parked in a wooden shed decades ago along Ballston Beach in Truro, Massachusetts. Over time, rolling ocean tides and high winds buried the Jeep with sand.

“In the beginning it just got filled up with sand. We couldn’t drive on the beach anymore. That was prohibited about 40 years ago. So there was no urgency to get the Jeep out, but in front of it it started filling up with sand and at a certain point we weren’t allowed to move the sand anymore without the environmental hoops they made you jump through – there was no urgency, so we just let it go.”

John said recovering the Jeep was not too difficult.

“Moving the sand wasn’t really an issue. They came here with a little Bob Cat, moved the sand out – front-end loader, took the doors off and they hooked the chain around the axle and start pulling it out. It came out in a couple of pieces because it’s been there for 40 years and was kind of rusty, but it came out and I got a couple of souvenirs. I got the hubcaps, door handle. That’s about it. It was pretty much shot.”
