Several passengers on a JetBlue flight were injured and hospitalised on Thursday after an abrupt altitude drop during the flight from Mexico to New Jersey, forcing an emergency diversion to Florida.

Flight 1230 departed Cancun International Airport bound for Newark Liberty International Airport when the Airbus A320 encountered a flight control malfunction mid-flight, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The plane made its unscheduled landing at Tampa International Airport at 2:19 p.m. Eastern time.

Medical personnel met the plane upon arrival to evaluate passengers and crew members, with multiple passengers requiring hospital visits, JetBlue said in a statement. The airline did not immediately disclose the total number of injured.

Air traffic control recordings from <a href="https://www.liveatc.net/">LiveATC.net</a> captured a radio transmission from the flight reporting the injuries.

"We've got at least three people injured. It seems like maybe a laceration in the head," a voice said in the recording.

JetBlue removed the plane from active service pending a thorough inspection. The carrier said it will launch a comprehensive internal review to determine what caused the altitude loss.

"The safety of our customers and crewmembers is always our first priority, and we will work to support those involved," the airline said in its statement.
<h2>JetBlue Challenges</h2>
Thursday's mishap marks the latest in a series of operational challenges for the New York-based carrier. In June, a JetBlue flight arriving at Boston Logan International Airport from Chicago <a href="https://www.ntd.com/jetblue-flight-from-chicago-slides-off-runway-at-bostons-logan-airport-no-injuries-reported_1073392.html">skidded</a> off the runway and stopped in the grass, though no injuries were reported in that incident.

The airline has also been navigating financial pressures this year. JetBlue ended operations at Miami International Airport in September as part of a broader cost-cutting initiative focused on eliminating unprofitable routes. The carrier reported a net loss of $208 million in the first quarter of 2025.

JetBlue announced a new strategic partnership with United Airlines in May called Blue Sky, which enables customers to share frequent flyer miles and book flights across both carriers. The partnership began in October.
