Tatiana Schlossberg, an environmental journalist and granddaughter of former President John F. Kennedy, died Tuesday morning following a battle with terminal cancer, according to the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation. She was 35.

The Kennedy family announced her death through a statement posted on social media Tuesday. "Our beautiful Tatiana passed away this morning. She will always be in our hearts," the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/JFKLibraryFdn/posts/pfbid0zwkykMiGdARQGR8hEhvJNDmCcQXEkdiUhSXCCTV9c5nty3nRzizUppyU2yVsaAMgl">statement</a> said. Neither the cause of death nor her location at the time was disclosed.

Schlossberg had publicly revealed her terminal diagnosis in an <a href="https://www.ntd.com/jfks-granddaughter-battles-terminal-leukemia-given-one-year-to-live_1109616.html">essay</a> published by The New Yorker in November. The piece detailed her 18-month struggle with acute myeloid leukemia, a rare and aggressive cancer she was diagnosed with just hours after giving birth to her daughter on May 25, 2024.

According to her essay, Schlossberg's doctor noticed her white blood cell count had soared to 131,000 cells per microliter—dramatically exceeding the normal range of 4,000 to 11,000. The diagnosis came as a shock to Schlossberg and her husband, George Moran, a urology resident.

"It's not leukemia," Schlossberg recalled telling her husband. "What are they talking about?"

Medical testing confirmed she had developed a particularly rare form of the disease called Inversion 3, which appears in fewer than 2 percent of acute myeloid leukemia cases. Such a mutation is predominantly seen in older patients, making her case especially unusual given her age and fitness level.

Schlossberg described herself as exceptionally healthy before her diagnosis, having swum a mile while nine months pregnant and regularly running 5 to 10 miles in Central Park. Despite her fitness, the disease proved relentless.

Her treatment was extensive and grueling. She spent five weeks at Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital and underwent months of chemotherapy. Schlossberg received stem cells from her sister for a bone marrow transplant, then later underwent a second transplant using cells from an unrelated donor.

"My transplant doctor said that leukemia with my mutation 'liked to come back,'" she wrote in her essay. The cancer repeatedly returned despite multiple interventions. In January, she tried experimental CAR-T-cell therapy, a treatment that engineers immune cells to target cancer.

The treatments took a severe physical toll. Schlossberg lost 30 pounds and had to relearn how to walk. In recent weeks before her November essay, her doctor estimated he could keep her alive for perhaps a year.

Before her illness, Schlossberg had established herself as a respected voice in environmental journalism. She worked as a reporter covering climate change and the environment for The New York Times' Science section.

Her 2019 book "Inconspicuous Consumption: The Environmental Impact You Don't Know You Have" earned the Society of Environmental Journalists' Rachel Carson Environment Book Award in 2020. She had been planning to write a book about ocean conservation before her diagnosis.

Schlossberg's death adds another chapter to the Kennedy family's history of tragedy. Her mother, Caroline Kennedy, was 5 years old when Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas in 1963. Caroline was 10 when her uncle, Robert F. Kennedy, was assassinated in Los Angeles in 1968 while running for president.

Caroline's brother, John F. Kennedy Jr., died in 1999 when his single-engine plane crashed into the Atlantic Ocean near Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts. His wife, Carolyn, and her sister, Lauren Bessette, also died in the crash.

Tatiana's grief over leaving her young family behind was evident in her November essay. "For my whole life, I have tried to be good, to be a good student and a good sister and a good daughter, and to protect my mother and never make her upset or angry," she said. "Now I have added a new tragedy to her life, to our family's life, and there's nothing I can do to stop it."

She was especially regretful about her inability to care for her daughter. "I didn't ever really get to take care of my daughter—I couldn't change her diaper or give her a bath or feed her, all because of the risk of infection after my transplants," she wrote.

She feared her two young children would not remember her. "Mostly, I try to live and be with them now," she wrote in her essay. "But being in the present is harder than it sounds, so I let the memories come and go."

Schlossberg is survived by her husband, George Moran; her daughter and son; her mother, Caroline Kennedy; her father, designer Edwin Schlossberg; and her siblings, Rose and Jack Schlossberg, who are President Kennedy's other grandchildren.
