Judge’s Release of Illegal Immigrant Defendants ‘Political’ and ‘Encourages Criminal Behavior’: Texas Attorney

El Paso County Magistrate Judge Humberto Acosta’s release of illegal immigrants accused of participating in last month’s border riot was a “political maneuver,” says Kinney County attorney Brent Smith. Personal recognizance bonds, Mr. Smith says, are typically given when a defendant is a U.S. citizen with ties to the community, who is not accused of a violent crime and is not a flight risk—which he says does not apply to the defendants in the border riot cases.
