Kanye West decided not to go through with a deal to buy a $14 million luxury condo in Miami on Feb. 6 due to privacy reasons.
The condo was initially listed for $15.5 million by Alex Blavatnik, the brother of energy billionaire Len Blavatnik, a source said, according to Page Six.
West had committed to buying the four-bedroom, five-and-a-half-bath unit for his wife, Kim Kardashian as a Christmas present last year, but since backed out of the deal.
Kardashian was not entirely fond of Kanye’s “spontaneous multimillion-dollar purchases,” said the source. However, when she saw how excited he was about the surprise for her, she decided to be supportive and did not want to hurt his feelings and went along with it, according to PEOPLE.
In December, West and Kardashian were photographed standing on the balcony of the condo unit they were committed to buy, and they realized that the condo did not offer the privacy that they needed, both for themselves, as well as for the family.
A source close to the family said, “It was just not a good fit for the family. It’s not private and not enough rooms for other family guests. They need a property that’s bigger, more private and preferably a house.”
“They are not keeping the Miami condo.”
The West-Kardadians also thought they could put the money that they were going to spend on the condo to better use—perhaps somewhere that would offer more privacy and seclusion. Unfortunately, this meant that the couple would not be getting back the $600,000 down payment that they put on the condo unit.
The Importance of Privacy
Both Kim Kardashian and Kanye West value the aspect of privacy, as it is a crucial part of their family. However, it hasn’t always been this way, as Kardashian learned to value West’s desire for privacy.
Before their marriage—or even before they met—Kardashian always liked to be seen, she loved the spotlight. In fact, her whole world was revolved around being in the spotlight, she said, according to DailyMail.
In an interview with Alec Baldwin, she said that after filming their show, she would go and get her hair and makeup done, and then go out — “‘what is the hottest restaurant in Hollywood? Where can I go? Where can I be seen? Who is there? What are they doing? Who is there?’”
Back then, for her, everything had to be public.
After she met West, she recalled that he taught her about the value of privacy. She said that as a rapper, West’s work and music is very much seen and heard in the public. However, when he wasn’t working, he liked to keep to himself.
Now, she said, she has learned to value this aspect of privacy and prefers it over her old lifestyle, away from all the paparazzi, she said in the interview.
“Where can I go on vacation where nobody will see us? All I want is privacy. I never thought that I would be at that point,” she said.
Kardashian and West have a few homes elsewhere, with their primary residence being a mansion in Hidden Hills, California. The interior was a work of a collaboration between the couple and a Belgian architect, Axel Vervoordt. It features white walls with very little furnishings, according to PEOPLE. The mansion also includes two swimming pools, two spas, and a vineyard, all of which sit on 3.5 acres of land.
They wanted a house that didn’t require baby-proofing, but they had a hard time keeping the house clean since they have three children—4-year-old North, 2-year-old Saint, and 3-month-old Chicago. Kardashian said, according to PEOPLE, that she runs around the mansion with towels, presumably to clean around her children and maintain the light colors of the mansion.
Images of the home were shared by West on social media after their renovation. Initially having bought the mansion for $20 million, the mansion is now worth $60 million, according to Kris Jenner.
They bought the mansion back in 2014 without the public’s awareness, and they wanted to keep it that way. Hence, when West shared the images with the public on Twitter, Kardashian had a few things to say about it on the same platform.
Ummm babe. We had a rule to not show our home on social media! Soooo can we now allow KUWTK filming in the home? ???????? https://t.co/bUMAn29K5K

“Ummm babe. We had a rule to not show our home on social media! Soooo can we now allow KUWTK filming in the home?”
The tweet had since caused some misconceptions, and the reality TV star made a follow-up tweet explaining that it had a been a joke, and she was not at all reprimanding her husband.
However, the photos of their mansion were deleted from West’s twitter page.
In November 2017, they sold their Bel-Air mansion for $17.8 million to Marina Acton, a tech investor, and moved in to their current residence in Hidden Hills after the renovation in December, according to PEOPLE.
