Most people know of the famous Katz’s Delicatessen. The NYC restaurant is known for its pastrami and corned beef. It’s been shipping salami to the Army since World War II.
Katz’s was featured in rom com “When Harry Met Sally.” Many celebrities have dined here and their photos grace the walls of the 300-seat deli.
While Katz’s has been able to deliver nationwide, it now wants expand its shipping capacity to around the globe.
A new 30,000 square-foot shipping facility in Hackensack, New Jersey will open sometime in the next year, said 29-year-old owner Jake Dell.
“I think one of the biggest challenges is keeping the taste the same as it goes in transit. I think it is something that we struggle with on a daily basis. And we are constantly looking to improve that. And I don’t think every single pound is perfect because not every single pound of meat is exactly the same,” he said.
Deli plans to ship perishable delicacies like pastrami and corned beef internationally. But he’s still not sure when he can roll that out or where it will begin. Canada is a first option, he says.
Katz’s has been a fixture on the Lower East Side since 1888. Katz’s was at the center of New York’s Jewish immigrant community in the early years of the 20th century.
Tourists eating at Katz’s say they look forward to the expanded shipping option.
“It’s far away to mail some food to Israel, but if it come to Israel then yes, definitely,” said Yaakov Sabbagh, who lives in Jerusalem.
“You know I left New York and this was one of my staples, and it’s nice to know that if I want a pastrami sandwich I can get it now,” said former New Yorker Bill Schleifman.
