A Kenyan man and Kenyan woman dominated the Boston Marathon this year. Kenya’s Geoffrey Kirui picked up the title for the men. He outpaced American Galen Rupp down the final stretch to win.

Kenya’s Edna Kiplagat was the first woman to finish, beating her closest competitor, Bahrain’s Rose Chelimo, by nearly a minute. The best American female competitor was the third place women’s runner Jordan Hasay.

Tens of thousands of people came out to watch the race amid heavy security. The runners also raced past the site of the 2013 bombing.
