Kevin Hart made his first public appearance since his car crash back in September, when the actor was seriously injured, according to multiple reports.

On Nov. 10, while at the E! People’s Choice Awards in Los Angeles, the actor and comedian was awarded a prize for the best comedy act, according to Today. After receiving the award from Robert Downey Jr., he expressed how thankful he was to be alive in his speech.

“First and foremost, thank God, because I definitely don’t have to be here,” Hart said, referring to his car accident, according to Huffpost. “Being that I am, it makes me appreciate life even more. It makes me appreciate the things that really matter—family. I want to thank my wife, my kids, who really stepped up to the plate for me.”

In addition, he also thanked the audience and fans who were in attendance during the awards show. He said their support and energy had a profound effect on him, and he thanked them for being there for him during his recovery, HuffPost reported.

“You have no idea the effect you have on us as entertainers—your energy, your support. It means the world and I truly want to thank you guys for being there for me in my difficult time,” Hart said.

On Oct 29, Hart shared a video on Instagram—the first one after his car crash—where he opened up about his accident. In the video, he shared his journey through recovery and thanked the people who have given him continual support.

“You know, when God talks, you got to listen. And I swear, life is funny because some of the craziest things that happened to you end up being the things that you needed the most,” Hart said in the video. The comedian shared that he believed this to be a message and that he needed to slow things down.

“In this case, I honestly feel like God basically told me to sit down. You know, you’re moving too fast. You’re doing too much, sometimes you can’t see the things that you’re meant to see,” Hart said.

“But, After my accident, I see things differently. I see life from a whole new perspective. My appreciation for life is through the roof. I’m thankful for my family, my friends,” Hart said in the video. “Don’t take today for granted, because tomorrow’s not promised. More importantly, I’m thankful for God, I’m thankful for life. I’m thankful simply for still being here.”

According to Huffpost, the comedian had suffered from three spinal fractures during the accident. Hart was a passenger in his car that was driven by his friend, Jared Black. During the incident, the car went off a Los Angeles highway and landed in a ditch. Two other people had to be cut from the car.

The comedian shared that he had to undergo spinal surgery, and following that, was hospitalized for 10 days and had been doing physical therapy since.
