The eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano on the Canary Island of La Palma could be nearing its end. It fell silent late on Monday as the constant tremors stopped, though experts caution it’s too early to tell.

The quiet spell followed a dramatic eruption in the early hours of Monday when thick clouds of toxic fumes prompted a brief lockdown of about a third of the island’s population.
