Through “The King and the Clown”, the first Korean historical movie which attracted over 10 million viewers in Korea.
“The Throne” which made actor Yoo Ah-in one of the best actors on 2015. Director Lee Joon-Ik who has directed these movies is called “The Master of Korean Historical Drama Films”. He laid the touchstone for the huge trend for historical movie trend in the past 5 years.
Lately, Director Lee Joon-Ik was invited for the “Korean Movie Night: Master Series” which opened in New York City and hosted by the Korea Culture Center.
Actually, Korean historical movies were not always loved like now. Even in the Korean film industry, people thought strongly that this genre would be hard to succeed. After the 1970’s, a number of historical movies dropped gradually and when it reached around the year 2000, they were almost unproduced.
However, in 2005, Director Lee Joon-Ik first historical movie “The King and the Clown” had more than 10 million viewers, making it a huge phenomenon.
In 2015, the movie “The Throne” reminded us once more again that Director Lee Joon-ik Lee is a historical movie master.
Director Lee: In the case of “The Throne”, 90% of the story was based on records. Especially in the Joseon dynasty, our ancestors really put big efforts on the recording. So the writers could use the records which are related to the prince’s various stories. They thoroughly checked and used them as lines in the film and nearly 90% of the lines are existent in the actual records.
Host Hyesoo: Actually, when we see characters in your film, a common keyword we could find was a sense of inferiority and many people agreed with that.
Director Lee: Every man is an inferior being and the sense of inferiority comes out from the relationship. For example, in “The Throne”, where does the father’s strong obsession come from? We can find his intention to retrieve something when he was becoming king. Or there’s a realistic inferiority what Dong-Ju felt from Mong-Gyu. Those things when it comes to the acting process, when the actors actually act on the scene and deeply gets immersed by emotion, they don’t have any chance but to confess their inferiority. We should vent it out. Not only this movie. When it comes to our lives, when we see our attitude in other people’s perspective, we get angry at some moment or jealous of someone, there could be a reason when we see inferiority thoroughly.
Host Hyesoo: How can we overcome it?
Director Lee: We have to admit it. I think we don’t have to overcome the sense of inferiority. All we have to do is just simply admit it. If we admit, we don’t face a tragedy coming from it. Like the saying “Know Yourself” as Socrates once said. Confucious also said something like that. If we put excessive efforts on overcoming inferiority, it could cause harm to somebody, and they can also feel inferiority because of me. Therefore, I think we don’t have to see inferiority as something to overcome…
