London tower blaze survivor left with nothing

Aayla Moses lost everything in the Grenfell Tower fire. Flames engulfed the high-rise and killed at least 30 people.

She was lucky to survive, but she must start from scratch.

“All I had on me was my dressing gown, slippers and the house keys, and my phone, that was it,” said Moses.

Moses said she’s been deeply touched by other people’s generosity.

“People have just been so giving, and that’s another thing that’s really got me overwhelmed, as well—the amount of generosity that’s out there. Random people giving me money, that (is something) I have never seen in my life,” she said.

The blaze has been truly devastating for Moses and many others.

“People are walking around like bloody zombies. Everything has gone, they’ve lost their families, lost friends, lost their home, lost their identity,” said Moses.

The fire has sparked protests. Angry residents and neighbors have demanded answers as to how the blaze spread so quickly, amid reports that contractors installed a cheaper, less flame-resistant type of exterior panelling in a renovation of Grenfell Tower, which ended in May 2016.

Around 70 people are missing, according to Britain’s Press Association, and identification of the victims is proving very difficult.

British health authorities said that 19 patients are still being treated at four London hospitals.

Of those, 10 remain in critical condition.
