Los Angeles County’s new District Attorney George Gascón made changes to stop pursuing sentencing enhancements for crimes. This could reduce thousands of years of prison time for hundreds of defendants charged with robbery, murder, and other crimes. He claimed that “each additional sentence year causes a 4 to 7 percent increase in recidivism that eventually outweighs the incapacitation benefit.”

Therefore, he believes that sentence enhancements should be abolished. His new policy is now facing more backlash. Family members of crime victims expressed their anger and disappointment about the changes. Even the former LASD Detective and former Los Angeles County District Attorney believed it’s dangerous and ridiculous.
