Louisiana Couple Finds Lost Lottery Ticket—and It’s a Winner

A Louisiana couple will be having an especially happy Thanksgiving this year—and probably for many years to come.

Harold and Tina Ehrenberg bought some lottery tickets in early June, but misplaced them before the drawing.

While cleaning around their home in Mandeville, preparing for holiday guests, the couple found the lost tickets.

“We have family coming into town for Thanksgiving, so I was cleaning up the house and found a few Lottery tickets on my nightstand that we hadn’t checked,” Tina told the Lottery Commission on Nov.19.

When they checked the numbers, they found that one of them was a winner—a Jackpot winner. The ticket was from the June 6 drawing and the winning numbers were 03-07-30-31-35-38.

The couple had been holding on to a $1.8 million lottery ticket for more than five months.

The Ehrenbergs couldn’t believe their luck. What would the catch be?

Had they misread the numbers?

Had they missed the time limit? Louisiana’s lottery puts a 180-day limit on claimants—leave a prize longer than that, and no one gets it.

While Tina Ehrenberg kept checking the numbers, Harold Ehrenberg started doing the math.

“We kept checking the numbers again and again!” Harold explained. “Plus, I called the winning numbers hotline over and over,” Tina added.

The Ehrenbergs found the missing tickets just in time. The winning ticket would have expired after two more weeks.

An Early Christmas Present

Happy holidays for the Ehrenberg family were assured when they drove to the Lottery Commission office and had their winning ticket confirmed.

After taxes, the Ehrenbergs would be bringing home a check for $1,274,313.

Ehrenberg is a personal injury lawyer who also has 30 years experience as a chiropractor. His wife Tina runs his office and helps handle clients.

The couple plans to save the money for their retirement—which might come a little earlier now.

“We don’t have any plans to buy anything crazy or go on any big trips,” Tina told the Lottery Commission.

“The most fun is going to be depositing that check!” said Harold.

The store where they bought the ticket will also earn a holiday bonus.

The International Market on Barron Street in Metairie, Louisiana, will receive a check for $17,948.07, which is 1 percent of the prize.

If anyone is encouraged by the Ehrenbergs’ story to buy a ticket for Louisiana’s Lotto drawing, the Lottery Commission is thrilled, as long as the player is over 21 years of age.

For people who might find playing a little too attractive, the Lottery Commission recommends calling this toll-free hotline: 1-877-770-7867 for help.
