Thanks to an act of kindness that Tony Tolbert saw his father do more than once during his childhood, a single mother of four, who previously spent time living on the streets, doesn’t have to worry about whether or not they will have a roof over their head for a year.

Growing up, Tolbert, a Los Angeles lawyer, witnessed his father open the doors to their family house to those who were either in need of a place to eat or stay. He says that his father’s kindness towards complete strangers, as well as a story about a couple who sold their home and donated all the money to charity, inspired him to help out a family who was struggling.

The lucky family was Felicia Dukes and her four children.

Dukes explains that she was “just a regular person” who happened to fall behind on her bills after the birth of her daughter. As a result her family had to live for a time on the streets and in a transitional home. However, because of his age, Dukes’ oldest son was not allowed to live in the transitional housing, which made for a tricky situation.

Fortunately the situation was resolved when Tolbert heard about the single mother’s situation and decided to offer her and her family his fully-furnished home for only $1 a month.

He also offered to pay most of the bills.

As a result of Tolbert’s generosity, Dukes and her family no longer had to worry about living pay check to pay check. After their year was up, the single mother was able to move out and move into an apartment she could proudly call her own.

After much success with renting his home to Dukes and her family, Tolbert decided to open up his home again to another family in need. He hopes that people will be inspired by his act of kindness and reach out to those who may be in need of help.
