Nick Bostic of Lafayette, Indiana, saved an 18-year-old girl and her four young siblings from a house fire Monday morning.

While driving by the home at around 12:30 a.m, the Indiana man noticed the flames coming from the house.

“I saw the fire on the balcony so I slammed on the brakes, pulled in the driveway, and ran into the house from the back. I was hollering ‘Is there anybody in there?’” Bostic said, according to Fox 59.

After rushing into the home, he quickly found four people and helped them to safety. However, he rushed back into the house after being told one of the children was missing.

The flames grew with thick black smoke when Bostic reentered the home.

“The smoke just came out of nowhere. It was pitch black, pitch black. The heat was excruciating,” Bostic recalled.

He heard faint crying sounds and used it as a lead to find the child. He grabbed the child and jumped out of the second-story window.

“I grabbed her and held her snug and I ran up those stairs like a running back for the Colts. I jumped out that window,” Bostic said.

A Twitter post of police body camera footage shows the moment Bostic saved the 6-year-old child from the home. He was covered with cuts, burns, and blisters on his arms and legs. On Wednesday, he was treated at a hospital.

“Waking up every morning I have something to remind me of why I’m here, still alive,” Bostic said about his faith. “Why God keeps me here. He used me like his instrument that night.”

Luckily, none of the family members were injured during the process. Bostic reportedly said he doesn’t consider his actions heroic and expressed he was just doing what an ordinary person should do.

“If it were me up there trapped, or asleep and there was a fire, I’d be hoping that the guy driving would consider doing the same if they were able to,” Bostic remarked.

“His selflessness during this incident is inspiring, and he has impressed many with his courage, tenacity, and steadfast calmness in the face of such perilous danger,” said Lt. Randy Sherer of the Lafayette Police Department.

Sherer said Bostic’s heroic actions saved lives that night. In August, Bostic will be honored in a local Aviators baseball game, police said.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is still ongoing.
