A South Carolina man spent more than $500 so the girls he saw selling girl scout cookies could go inside and get warm.

The situation took place on Feb. 22 in Greenville, according to Kayla Dillard, whose daughter is in the girl scouts.

She said the man, whose name she did not get, bought seven packs of the cookies for $40.

“Gave the girls $40, told them to keep the change,” she said in a Facebook post. Then he came back to the table and said ‘Pack up all of your cookies. I’m taking them all so y’all can get out of this cold’ $540 he spent on cookies. What an amazing soul.”

She shared a picture of the man smiling and posing for a picture with two of the girl scouts.

The troop sold about 221 packages that night, though the number the man bought was unclear. It was about 34 degrees Fahrenheit when the good Samaritan bought the remaining cookies.

Dillard told CBS that the initial reaction was shock.

“When he told us to pack up all the cookies because he was going to buy them we were shocked. We stood there in shock for a little while,” she said.

She added to CNN: “What an amazing soul. It was about 34 degrees outside that night and we were there for about two hours already before he came. We all were shocked. The girls were very excited and thankful.”

The number of packages the man bought would have taken another day and a half of manning a table to sell, Dillard said.

She said the man was very nice.

“The only information we got out of the man was that he owns several businesses and that he was going to take the cookies to the businesses,” she told CBS.

“That man was just a very kind, sincere and humble man who loves children.”

Girl Scout Cookie Sales

According to the national organization, sales of the cookies go toward fresh experiences for the girls.

“One hundred percent of the net proceeds from Girl Scout Cookie sales is retained by the originating council and troop to fund activities for girls year-round as well as influential girl-led community projects. Each council determines its own revenue structure depending on how much it costs the council to buy cookies, the local retail price to sell cookies, and the amount of revenue shared with participating troops,” it stated.

“On average, Girl Scout council net revenue is approximately 65–75 percent of the local retail price of cookies; the amount shared with participating Girl Scout troops, referred to as troop proceeds, is approximately 10–20 percent of the local retail price,” it continued.

“Cookie program revenue is a critical source of funding for Girl Scout councils to deliver essential programs to troops and is often what makes it possible to reach girls in underserved areas and maintain camps and properties,” it added.

“Additionally, Girl Scout troops can pool their proceeds to pay for necessary supplies, activities, and group travel. Girl Scouts may not earn proceeds as individuals.”
