A man seen wielding a chainsaw in a suburban Melbourne street on Friday, June 28 has been calmed by police and taken into custody.

Nearby schools were locked down as officers responded to reports of the armed man in the northeastern suburb Eltham North.

Students at St Helena Secondary College and Glen Katherine Primary School were kept indoors during the drama, News Corp reported.

Police helicopters were flying overhead.

The lockdown is no longer in place.

“Police were called to Parry Road Eltham North about 1 p.m. this afternoon after reports that a man was in the street with a chainsaw,” a spokeswoman said in a statement, reported news.com.au.

“Police attended the scene and the man went to a nearby address. Officers are currently attempting to negotiate with the man who no longer has the chainsaw with him.”

The man was later taken into custody and transferred to hospital for assessment.

No one was injured.
