Shooting at Funeral in California Kills 1, Wounds 5 Others, Including Little Girl

Police said a lone gunman went on a shooting spree at a large gathering across from a skate park in Tulare, California, on the evening of March 4, killing one man and wounding five others.

A group of more than 50 people had gathered following the burial of a man who died in a car crash, Sgt. Hinojosa said.

Tulare Police Sgt. Edward Hinojosa told Action News at the scene a 23-year-old man was killed and one of the 5 wounded included a 7-year-old girl who was shot multiple times.

Sgt. Hinojosa said the 5 wounded are 2 adult men, 2 adult females, and the 7-year-old girl.

The little girl was transported to a nearby children’s hospital. She is expected to survive, ABC7 reported.

Hinojosa told the outlet one adult female victim was treated at the scene when a bullet grazed her, but the woman refused to go inside the ambulance for hospital treatment. The police chief didn’t have any additional information on the condition of the other adult victims.

Witnesses said a single person walked up and fired multiple rounds around 10:20 p.m. at an apartment complex at Tulare Avenue and I Street across from a skatepark in Tulare.

“We were all dancing, listening to music and drinking and the only thing I remember is hearing one shot, and then after that we heard like 10 rounds,” a witness told ABC7.

The scene was chaotic as officers arrived, and the entire department is helping investigate the crime scene, Hinojosa said.

At the time of this report, the gunman is still on the loose and police have not released any information on the suspect. The motive for the shooting remains unclear at this point, but Hinojosa said it may be gang-related.
