News of a “Matrix” reboot has brought a firestorm of mixed opinions. “The Matrix” was a phenomenal virtual reality shock to the public at the time of its release, bringing with it a sensibility and aesthetic to Hollywood that set a new standard for action movies. It also made legends of Keanu Reeves and Laurence Fishburne.

“The Matrix” brought a unique blend of action and intelligence, within a great movie that entertained and provoked minds. It was a different cinematic experience from its very first scene, it is the definition of a dystopian thriller and a godfather of steampunk.

News of a reboot caused an outcry over any tampering with the greatness of the original. Fans don’t like the idea of a Matrix movie without Keanu Reeves in the lead role or the Wachowskis helming creative control.

It is rumored that Michael B. Jordan is being sought for the main role. Alphas creator Zak Penn is said to be writing a treatment for the reboot. His Alphas show for Syfy lasted two seasons before it was canceled. Penn also helped write the script for “The Avengers,” and two X-Men films.

The Guardian talked about why “The Matrix” was such an influential movie, and why fans would be a bit nervous of a reboot.

“The first ‘Matrix’ film was created by the Wachowski siblings and starred Keanu Reeves as Neo, a computer programmer who learns that he and the rest of humanity have been trapped inside a simulated version of reality by sentient machines, and leads a rebellion against his robot overlords. It also featured Carrie-Anne Moss and Laurence Fishburne.”

The Guardian further talked about the impact.

“Released in 1999, the film immediately became a critical and commercial hit, spawning two less well-received sequels. It has also become enormously influential, with its “bullet time” special effects revolutionizing action filmmaking and receiving numerous homages on screen.”

When news of new “Star Wars” movies were announced, fans had the same reaction. That’s why J.J. Abrams played to the franchise and had to fit in so many original cast members. A “Matrix” reboot might benefit from the same concept. Put Keanu and Laurence in the movie, then transition into the hands of newer actors.

It’s still just a concept. How it is executed will determine if the Matrix brand will come out unscathed in the hands of a new cast and creative team. A “Matrix” reboot could usher in new fans who will dive into the whole artificial world concept.
