New York City Mayor Eric Adams says airline passengers will soon have a different way to travel to and from the city’s airports: electric taxi helicopters.

The city unveiled a plan on Monday to encourage the use of electric helicopters, which would bypass traffic and operate much more quietly than their gas-powered counterparts.

The first move would take place at the Downtown Manhattan heliport, by requiring the operator of the space to provide charging stations and support for the electric choppers, when the next five-year contract comes up for the space.

Mayor Adams said the city also would like to encourage delivery services to use EV helicopters, which could in turn reduce delivery truck traffic on city streets.
