Media Share Blame for Spread of Mass Shootings, Says Victim’s Dad

If you think for a moment about mass shootings, there’s a good chance you can recall more about the killers than the victims. That’s a direct result of media coverage, which people like Tom Teves argue is part of the problem.

On July 20, 2012, Tom Teves’s 24-year-old son Alex was killed in a mass shooting at a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado. In the aftermath, Alex’s parents Tom and Caren Teves were disturbed by the amount of coverage given to the killer; everywhere they looked, they saw his face. Relatively little attention was given to the victims.

Tom Teves tells us that after some research, he and his wife learned that the quest for infamy is a common motivating factor in rampage mass killings. To spread that important message and to try to save lives, they founded No Notoriety.
