Former White House staffer Mercedes Schlapp told NTD that Americans need to wake up unless they want to lose the United States. Schlapp is the host of this year’s Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC).

She said her father was a counter-revolutionary in communist Cuba and was incarcerated for six years as a political prisoner.

“And he always told us the importance of, not only was America the greatest country in the world—and he made that very clear to me as a little girl—but also how we have to know that our republic and our democracy is very fragile,” said Schlapp. “And you could lose a country in a matter of decades if you don’t work hard to protect its freedoms.”

“And I felt very strongly as a young girl that my calling, my vocation, was to ensure that I be in that fight, to make sure that we would stand up for the values—the American values of protecting our inalienable rights of ‘Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness,'” she said.

According to Schlapp, CPAC strongly supports pushing back against communist and socialist elements in the United States.
