Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack has been re-elected as leader of the Nationals party in a leadership spill triggered by the resignation of deputy leader and former sports minister Senator Bridget McKenzie.

Michael McCormack fended off a challenge from former party leader Barnaby Joyce following a party room ballot in Canberra Tuesday morning.

“It’s a great honour and a privilege to continue to serve as the leader of the National Party,” McCormack told reporters at Parliament House.

Minister for Water Resources David Littleproud was elected deputy leader to replace McKenzie.
