Another rescue ship arrived on Italy’s shores. It carried nearly 400 migrants, but one was already dead. He was put into a coffin that was driven away.

The death highlights the danger of the journey many leaving from the Libyan coast risk their lives to take. The dead teenager brought off of the ship is believed to have been shot by smugglers for his hat.

Regina Catrambone, MOAS co-founder and director, talked about her thoughts on the migrants, “I am sad that Europe is failing and is not taking the responsibility for this humanitarian catastrophe that is unfolding in front of our eyes. People continue to die. People are desperate. There (in Libya), there are families. I wish that we don’t criminalize the word solidarity and mercy because these are very important words. Ethical and moral actions need to be taken by our politician(s). I wish that this appeal could reach them.”

This year over 1,000 migrants have died trying to reach Europe.
