New Yorkers, whether Trump supporters or not, said they supported the president’s decision to strike Syria.

Several New Yorkers were asked on April 7 for their reactions to the missile strike on Syria’s al-Shayrat airfield.

“I think that he had to do something,” said Paula Romano. “It was horrible what they did to their own people. It’s really devastating, all those children, all those people, innocent people, and the way that they died, how tragic, how they suffered. It was heartbreaking, seriously. So although I’m not a Trump fan in general I think that he did the right thing.”

President Trump ordered two U.S. warships to fire 59 cruise missiles at the airbase, which was the launch point for Syria’s latest chemical weapons attack on its own citizens, on April 4.

At least 70 civilians and about a dozen children died in that attack, poisoned by what seemed to be nerve gas.

Another New Yorker, identified only as Andrew, said, “I definitely don’t agree with most of his politics and I don’t think his hands were tied, but I think he may have made the right call. Enough is enough. When innocents are being slaughtered in such a brutal fashion, America cannot stand idly by.”

President Trump made it clear in his remarks after the attack that he had struck “to prevent and deter” the use of chemical weapons.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad promised not to use chemical weapons after a 2013 attack on civilians. Russia promised to guarantee Assad’s compliance.

However, there have been credible reports of chemical weapons attacks throughout the past several years.

Chemical agents are banned as weapons of war.
