A 26-year-old mother who had just given birth died after an elevator malfunctioned in a freak accident in a Spanish hospital.

The stretcher that was carrying her got stuck in between floors and the elevator, Fox News reported.

Rocio Cortes Nunez was being taken between the second and third floors of Our Lady of Valme Hospital in Seville.

“I’m a total wreck,” her husband, Jose Gaspar, told ABC Sevilla. “This cannot continue. Today it has been Rocio, but tomorrow it could be another person.”

Some media outlets said she was essentially “cut in half” by the elevator accident.

“I went to the information desk,” her mother, Carmen Nunez, said. “They told me that a girl had died, and then they confirmed that she was my daughter. What a cruel death she suffered.”

“They have killed my beautiful daughter, the joy of my life, and they’ve left three young girls without their mom,” Rocío’s father, Juan Manuel Cortés, added.

Nunez leaves behind three daughters: Carmen, 5, Rocio, 4, and newborn Triana, The Telegraph reported.

It reportedly took firefighters two hours to get her body.

Her mother said, “My heart missed a beat. I asked after my daughter but no-one was telling me anything,” as reported by The Telegraph.

“She had given birth at 11 in the morning so I went to the information desk. They told me a young girl had died and then confirmed it was my daughter. What a cruel death she’s suffered.”

She had just given birth to her daughter and was on her way to the maternity ward.

Regional health minister Marina Alvarez described the incident as “quick, unusual and tragic,” El Correro reported.

The accident is believed to have been caused by a mechanical failure of the elevator’s door—but Alvarezt old the news outlet that the elevator had “passed all the controls and complied with the regulations.”

Nunez and Gaspar had been married four years.
