N. California Sheriff’s Deputies Shot After Being Called to Church

Two Northern California deputies were shot in a small Yuba County town on Tuesday morning, Aug. 1.

The officers were taken to a nearby hospital, but their conditions weren’t released, NBC affiliate KCRA reported.

At around 9 a.m., someone called the sheriff’s department saying someone was stealing marijuana plants at a Rastafarian church at the 9000 block of Marysville Road in Oregon House, KCRA reported.

When they responded, a man opened fire on deputies, hitting two. The suspect escaped, officials told the station.

In a Facebook statement, the Yuba County Sheriff’s Department said it is “actively investigating” the incident.

“It is currently an active critical incident and the suspect has not been secured. Please remain away from the area,” the department said.

The suspect was described as an “agitated individual, possibly armed,” Yuba County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Leslie Carba told the Sacramento Bee.

Yuba County is located about 50 miles north of Sacramento.

Further details were not released, including a description of the suspect.
