A cancer test that takes as little as 10 minutes could become a reality, according to an Australian study.

Scientists from University of Queensland have discovered a unique DNA structure that appears to be present in different types of cancers, according to a news article published on Dec. 5 in The Conversation.

One of the researchers, Dr Abu Sina, said the unique DNA structure is found in every type of breast cancer they tested, as well as in some other forms of cancer, including prostrate, colorectal, and lymphoma.

The finding allows for cancer to be detected in any type of tissue, including blood, which means the new test is both convenient and inexpensive, according to Professor Trau who is also on the research team.

Although the test has not been conducted on humans, results have so far been promising. In a test of 200 human cancer samples and normal DNA, the accuracy of new cancer detection method was up to 90 percent accurate.

According to medical professionals, early detection of cancer is crucial in increasing the rate of successful treatment. The new technology is hoped to bring a new approach to cancer diagnosis in the future.
