The first of 20 high-tech, light aluminum ferries aimed to expand New York City’s transportation system arrived in early April.

Each of these ferries cost more than $4 million. This is part of Mayor de Blasio’s $325 million plan to enable New Yorkers to enjoy the additional commute option via ferry at the same price of a subway ride ($2.75).

Cameron Clark, from Citywide Ferry by Hornblower, said: “The boats are 150 passenger vessels. Medium-speed Catamarans. Think of it as the Southwest model where you are able to move planes and people around to keep it fluid and ensure high on-time and completed trip performance.”

In addition to new vessels being built, new landing terminals are being constructed to accommodate increased ferry stops.

Ferry services are expected to operate beginning this summer.
