One day a year 32,000 people ride their bikes through the streets of New York City car-free.

Riders of all ages and fitness levels come together to tackle the 43-mile route that takes them through Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx and Staten Island.

Bike New York has hosted this event for the past 40 years. Their mission has always been to raise awareness of bike safety and bike education all over the city. Last year, they helped more than 17,000 people learn bike skills.

Lenny Rosenfield has ridden in more than 25 of them.

“I’ve done it about 25 times. …I’ve probably been doing it in the 80s and 90s and 2000s,” he said. “It’s wonderful, I love it. I love it.”

The major draw to the bike tour is that it isn’t a race, so riders can ride at their own pace, stop and take in the scenic views of Manhattan along the way. They can even enjoy the entertainment at dedicated rest areas scattered through the route.

It’s a unique way to experience the city and it’s famous landmarks, bridges and neighborhoods.

Upon finishing the 43 mile ride, riders will experience a ferry ride from Staten Island back to Manhattan and enjoy the beautiful Manhattan skyline to reward their efforts.

More than 778,000 New Yorkers ride a bike regularly. Gale Brewer, Manhattan Borough President was there.

“They started out 40 years ago with 250 bikers. Now they have 32,000. People come from all over the world to participate,” she said. “Good for the economy, good for New York. We’re a great bike city.”
