At least 10 people were killed and 20 injured in an explosion on the St. Petersburg metro in Russia.

The number of people killed and injured are still preliminary, according to Russia’s National Anti-Terrorism Committee.

The explosion happened between the Sennaya Ploshchad station and the Tekhnologichesky Institut station.

A second device was found at another metro station but has been made safe.

Russian state run media TASS reported that St. Petersburg’s Prosecutor General’s office called the explosion a possible terrorist attack.

All the stations on the St. Petersburg metro have now been closed.

Moscow metro said it is taking additional security measures in case an attack happens.

Russian President Vladimir Putin was in St. Petersburg for a meeting at the time of the explosion. He said causes of the explosions are being investigated, including terrorism. He also expressed his condolences.

Russian media Interfax reported that least one of the bombs may have been filled with shrapnel.

Videos and photos on social media showed injured people lying bleeding on a platform. Some people were being treated by emergency services. There were also images of the subway station enveloped in thick smoke. One photo showed a subway car mangled by the explosion, with its doors blasted open.

Above ground, ambulances and other emergency vehicles were seen parked in the area. A helicopter was also seen near the blast site.
